Broken garage door spring replacement

A spring failure is the loud bang people describe as sounding like a gunshot in the garage. The spring counterbalances the entire weight of the door, so once it goes the door will not lift and the opener cannot move it. This is the single most common call we take.

What we handle

Common questions

Why replace both springs when only one broke?
Springs are installed as a pair and wear at the same rate. Replacing one leaves a worn spring pulling against a new one, which unbalances the door and usually means a second call within a year.
Can I open the door until you arrive?
Please do not. With a broken spring the door is 150 to 200 lbs of dead weight with nothing holding it up.
How long do springs last?
A standard spring is rated around 10,000 cycles, which is roughly five to seven years for a typical household. High-cycle springs run 20,000 or more.
