Garage door will not close? Check these three things first

Most doors that will not close are not broken. Three checks, five minutes, and you may not need us at all.

Start with the safety sensors

Every garage door opener made since 1993 has two small sensors mounted near the floor, one on each side of the opening, roughly six inches up. They shine an invisible beam across the doorway. If anything interrupts that beam while the door is closing, the door stops and reverses — by design, because that is what stops a door closing on a child.

When a door refuses to close and the opener light blinks, the sensors are almost always the reason. Not a fault. The system working exactly as intended, on bad information.

  • Look for cobwebs, leaves, or a stray recycling bin breaking the beam
  • Wipe both lenses with a dry cloth — road dust builds up faster than people expect
  • Check both sensors show a steady light. One blinking or dark means they are not seeing each other
  • Nudge the misaligned one gently until its light goes steady

Then check the travel limits

If the sensors are fine and the door still stops short or reverses at the same point every time, the opener may think the floor is higher than it is. That setting is the close limit, and it drifts over years of use.

Most openers have limit adjustment screws or buttons on the motor housing, and the manual shows which direction is which. Small adjustments — a quarter turn at a time, then test. Large adjustments are how people end up with a door that slams.

Then check the track

A door that binds part way down is often catching on something physical: a bent track, a roller that has come out, or debris in the lower track. Look along both sides with the door open.

If you can see a visible kink in the track or a roller sitting outside it, stop using the opener. Each cycle bends the track further and turns a cheap fix into a section replacement.

When it is worth calling someone

Call if the door is heavy to lift by hand, if you can see a gap in the coiled spring above the opening, or if the door is visibly crooked. Those are load-bearing problems and they do not get better with adjustment.

Also call if the sensors are clean, aligned, showing steady lights, and it still will not close. At that point it is wiring or a failed sensor pair, and both need testing rather than guessing.

Common questions

Why does my garage door close then immediately reopen?
That is the safety reverse. Either the sensors lost their beam mid-travel, or the door met resistance and the opener interpreted it as an obstruction. Clean and align the sensors first, then look for anything binding in the track.
Can I disable the safety sensors?
You can bypass them, and you should not. They exist because doors used to close on children. If they are faulty, replace them rather than disconnecting them.
The opener light blinks a set number of times. Does that mean anything?
Yes — most brands use blink codes to identify the fault. The number of blinks maps to a specific problem in the manual for your model, and it will usually name the sensors directly.
